The artistic elements may have a practical use or may be purely aesthetic in purpose, including items such as painted benches, wall murals, metal sculptures, birdhouses and feeders, whirligigs, painted game boards, windsocks, printed banners. During these classes, the children learn about the purposes and functions of public art, the principals of composition, the importance of craftsmanship, the durability of materials, methods and techniques for working with various materials, purposes and function of public art, and translating ideas into two-and three-dimensional designs. The sequential process of creating the artistic elements for the four gardens will teach the children and youth important skills, such as planning and working cooperatively in the step-by-step process of reaching a goal.
