This exhibition of approximately 90 photographs explores two themes: the continued use of black-and-white photography as a medium of visual and historical consequence, and the growing tendency of photographers to create imaginative narratives for their imagery, sometimes arranging figures and objects in environments or constructing tableaux for emotive effect.

The photographers selected include some whose work has emerged within the last decade. The exhibition focuses on works by American artists but also includes important international photographers. Among those represented in the exhibition are: Robert Adams, Vic Muniz, Cindy Sherman, Sherry Levine, Duane Michals, James Casabere, and Hiroshi Sugimoto.

ArtsPower's Madeline and the Bad Hat is an original musical based upon the much-loved book series by Ludwig Bemelmans's. It traces the adventures of a young Parisian girl who - despite starting off on the wrong foot with a mischievous new neighbor - eventually learns that first impressions aren't everything.

The Spanish Ambassador moves into the house next door, Madeline and Miss Clavel and the other girls quickly discover that his son Pepito is a true horror! Rude and conceited, Pepito seems at first to be nothing but trouble. But when he unexpectedly finds himself in real danger, it's up to the resourceful Madeline to get him out of it. Can she teach Pepito a lesson; does he have a good side after all?

Since Vietnam opened its doors to the West, a booming art business has brought economic prosperity to many artists - predominantly men. Vietnamese women, long stereotyped as living in the shadows of their husbands, have been virtually overlooked by the international art world. Now, a younger generation of women find themselves in position to critique prevailing norms and to question the status quo. Changing Identity is the first survey of its kind to tour the United States, featuring the work of ten Vietnamese women breaking barriers and presenting a fresh, unique perspective on Vietnamese culture.

The inspiration for the dances comes from nature, Chinese classical literature and history, and folk legend. The original choreography is drawn from the styles of Chinese classical, folk, ballet and modern dance. Chinese traditional music is characterized by rich tonality and emotion, and is connected to language and poetry. Each dance is complemented by a short film depicting the cultural and artistic background of the dance, and information about Chinese traditional and ethnic culture.

Rutgers-Camden Center for the Arts is excited to welcome the Newark Black Film Festival (add a link to the site) to the Gordon Theater from September 11 through 26.

Since its inception in 1974, the Newark Black Film Festival has become known among its peers as the longest running black film festival in the United States. Throughout the years, it has continued to provide a progressive public forum for hundreds of emerging writers, directors, producers, performers and film buffs who enjoy African American and African Diaspora cinema. Screening in the summer months, the films that are shown reflect the full diversity of the black experience in America, both past and present. Each film selection encompasses a wide range of cinematic forms and formulas, from documentary to the avant-garde. Click here to see film schedule.

The Festival is free of charge to the public and receives funding in the form of special grants from foundations and corporations. The 2008 Festival season is made possible by a grant from Bank of America.
