Creative Dialogues: Art, Campus and Community

Throughout Camden’s history, public art has been commissioned to accomplish a variety of goals. Historic Johnson Park, built in the first quarter of the 20th century and populated with playful bronze sculptures and colorful nursery rhyme tiles, was intended as a community gathering space and haven for children of the area. The recent Gateway project, a large-scale sculptural glass corridor, is intended by artist Clyde Lynds to join the Rutgers University campus with the outlying community of Camden, creating a literal access point and a symbolic partnership. When thoughtfully employed, public art can effectively serve a multitude of practical purposes in addition to the purely aesthetic.

Since 1978, when the Public Buildings Art Inclusion Act was passed by Governor Brendan Byrne, public art has become an important and highly visible source of contemporary artwork in New Jersey. The act required public building projects to include a “Percent for Art”, leading to public sculpture, murals, and installations in a vast range of settings. In Camden, this initiative for public art not only accounts directly for some of the works seen in Creative Dialogue: Art, Campus and Community, but has also inspired more overall awareness of the benefits of public art to the community.

Creative Dialogue: Art, Campus and Community features a wide array of public artworks, all reflecting unique aspects of the Camden community. In addition to showcasing Camden’s public art, the exhibition highlights the process of creating a public artwork and introducing it to the public space, including both the art-making itself and the community coordination required for a large-scale public project. One thing is certain, whether conceptualized on computers and built overseas, or sketched by the hand of one artist and painted by local schoolchildren, public art inspires collaboration and community effort in every stage of its creation.

Original exhibition organized by the Stedman Gallery, Rutgers-Camden Center for the Arts.
