Poetry Out Loud
Poetry Out Loud is a national recitation contest for high school students created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. It is administered in partnership with the State Arts Agencies of all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
By encouraging high school students to memorize and perform great poems, Poetry Out Loud invites the dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken word, and theater into the English class. This program, which began in 2005, helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.
Recitation and performance are major trends in poetry. There has been a recent resurgence of poetry as an oral art form, as seen in the slam poetry movement and the immense popularity of hip-hop music. Poetry Out Loud builds on that momentum.
Poetry Out Loud begins at the classroom level. Teachers are provided with free multimedia curriculum materials – a poetry anthology, audio guide, teachers’ guide, posters, and a comprehensive website, all aligned to national standards, to augment their regular poetry curriculum. Winners in each classroom advance to the school-wide competition, then to the regional competition, then to the state competition, and ultimately to the National Finals. Last year, over 200,000 students competed. The program will culminate in 2009-2010 with the National Finals in Washington, DC, April 25-27, 2010.
Rutgers-Camden Center for the Arts is the Region 1 (Southern New Jersey) partner with the NJ State Council on the Arts in New Jersey. If your school is located in Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, or Salem Counties, please contact RCCA for further information. The deadline for school registrations is November 17, 2009. The Region 1 competition will take place on February 10, 2010 from 10am to 12 noon. State finals will take place March 18, 2010 at NJN studios in Trenton from 10am to 12 noon. Visit www.poetryoutloud.org or www.JerseyArts.com for more information. Or call Noreen Scott Garrity at 856-225-6306 for more information.
